Comprehensive Diagnostic Hearing Testing @Perth Audiology & Dizziness

Perth Audiology & Dizziness offer diagnostic audiology consultations. We don't take short cuts or offering screenings as we believe your hearing and listening health plays a vital role in your quality of communication and life.

Your diagnostic audiology consultation will include the following:

  • Otoscopy (an examination of your outer ear and ear drum).

  • Tympanometry (a test to understand your middle ear health and how your ear drum moves. This test will tell us if you have a middle ear infection and what type of pressure you have)

  • Acoustic Reflex Threshold (ART) measure (a of your stapedial reflex muscle)

  • Oto-Acoustic Emissions - Distortion Product Oto-Acoustic Emissions (DPOAE) across various frequencies. This test will help us understand your outer hair cell health. This is one of the most important tests to understanding if you have damage to the delicate structures in your inner ear from noise, medications (oto-toxic drugs) etc.

  • Extended high frequency audiometry (including 250Hz to 20K Hz air conduction and bone conduction). We test your whole hearing organ (your cochlear) and not just the frequencies that a hearing aid will fit. This is extremely important to note, as many symptoms you report may lie beyond the 8k frequency. Check that your latest hearing test includes the frequencies beyond 8k Hz as this gives us a deep understanding of how your brain listens to speech, and speech in back ground noise.

  • Speech recognition testing, including speech in noise testing (do your audiometry results match what you hear and can recall). How you hear and listen in background noise.

  •

A detailed report is sent to your referral and/or yourself if you self-referred. This report will form the baseline of your hearing health history if it is your first time getting your hearing checked. If you've had previous hearing tests, this is a good record to keep to track how your hearing is changing over time.

Science and our recommendations on when to get a comprehensive hearing check are:

  • If you work in a noisy industry (hair dresser, dentist, tradie, carpenter, boiler maker etc or with chemicals that can impact your hearing organ)

  • If you are not following the conversation

  • If you are asking for repeats

  • If the volume is creeping up on the TV and radio

  • If you are taking oto-toxic medication (chemotherapy, aminoglycosides)

  • If you have diabetes, cardio-vascular and / or kidney issues (these co-morbidities are linked to the blood flow of your hearing and balance organ. Learn more here).

  • If you are over 50 years, at least once a year (like getting your teeth checked, its a good habit to form to get your hearing checked)

  • If you feel your hearing has changed and you can't hear like you used to

  • If you have a sudden hearing loss (e.g., if you wake up one day and your hearing has suddenly dropped seek medical attention ASAP and text or call us to make a same day appointment. This is paramount as we have a small window to recover your hearing *pending what type of hearing loss).

A comprehensive hearing test (not screening) is a good starting point to ensure you follow conversations, stay socially active and keep your brain and mental health in a good state. You can booking your comprehensive hearing test here.

Whislt you do not need a referral to book an appointment, a referral will allow access to Medicare rebates. You can also claim private health rebates if you have the coverage. Audiology consults start at $195.00.
