I've been meaning to write a few case studies since I opened my own clinic here in Perth, WA this year. I always feel energised, accomplished and helpful after seeing people and supporting their real life cases. The power of giving people hearing clarity or supporting their ear health is extremely meaningful, especially as we are social creatures. Being social creatures means that one of our most important skills is communication and connection.

So, I am committed to writing at least one Real Life Story (RLS) a month now... You can read some of my real life stories on this page here or in this blog.

REAL LIFE STORY #1

Sounds pretty straight forward right? Prevention is ideal for any healthcare, however when prevention is not available, being PROACTIVE is key.

Proactive or early intervention when it comes to (hearing) healthcare see's better long term outcomes and better quality of life. In short, the sooner you do something about your hearing loss, the better your long term outcomes.

These long term outcomes include:

  1. Better or improved relationship communication and outcomes. Think less repeats from your partner or less frustrations in their questions.

  2. Better brain health. Less brain fog, fatigue and headaches.

  3. Better spatial awareness. Being aware of the world around you, wind outside your windows, knocking at your front door, the cyclist behind you ringing their bell.

  4. Reduced cognitive load. Your brain has to work hard to put the pieces of the world together. Untreated hearing loss (not doing anything about your hearing loss) leads to 3 times increase likelyhood of falls, social withdrawal and social isolation, depression, loneliness and more.

  5. Improved mental health. Hearing and listening is our social sense, the more you stay connected to the people and world around you, the better your social connection and mental health.

This blanket statement can be applied to any area of healthcare, and here, we sharethis young chap (30-39yo bracket) as a real life story (RLS).

Hearing aids are great pieces of technology that can connect to your phone and stream content like music, movies and take phone calls. Not only have they advanced so much to include the Bluetooth features that are ubiquitous to this world, they have decades of research that works for speech in noise processing. This is what makes hearing aids medical grade pieces of technology, and when professional fit through real ear measurements by an independent audiologist like myself, can support you with improved hearing and listening.

This young chap upgraded his hearing aids with me earlier last year. He opted for Starkey Genesis 24 as he liked the Bluetooth features and the clarity this brand offered. His last set lasted almost 5-6 years, they were a set of Unitron hearing aids, and he was interested in the rechargeable models and new technologies, especially the streaming function. He had seen me at my previous place of work and was supportive and happy to see me open my own clinic.

You can read more about his outcomes and use with hearing aids here: Real Life Story AKS.
